It seems like it's been quite awhile since I've done one of my Good Books review. With all the holidays and family visiting, then having to say good-bye to our little doggy friend, things got a bit busy. So to get back into the habit of writing these I wanted to share a series that was introduced to me when I was in High School. My cousins were a big fan of them and got me hooked.
These are called the "Wolfwalker" series by Tara K Harper.
The series follows the adult life of a woman named Dion. She is a talented healer from her village and she happens to have a telepathic bond with a wolf. What the people call being a wolfwalker. When it comes time for her twin brother, Rhom, to go on his "journey," a right of passage into manhood, the village sends Dion with him. The story begins with her separated from her brother. The caravan they were traveling with was attacked by large beetle-like creatures called worlags. She was injured in the attack but being a healer was able to treat her own wounds and with the help of her wolf able to escape the scene. Thinking her brother was killed she continues on her own trying to reach other humans.
Meanwhile the story introduces a man named Aranur, he is on the trail of some raiders that have kidnapped his little sister and two cousins. He and his companions come across a young man named Rhom. And Rhom agrees to help them in their search for the lost girls. Eventually Dion meets up with Aranur's group and is reunited with her brother. And their adventure continues.
The world they call home is filled with strange creatures. One being the beetle Worlags. More helpful to humans are the dnu, a six legged horse like creature.
Humans had colonized the planet many years earlier. Using wolfwalkers, they explored the new planet and some of the ancient homes still stand dotting the landscape.
The Domes inhabited by the first settlers became plagued by an alien disease and had to be abandoned. Because a huge number of colonists died their culture became more of a medevil society technology wise. And because their planet has many moons, a religion of calling on the moons for help became common.
Their journey to recover the kidnapped girls continues on into two more books.
The story is non-stop suspense and action. Being chased by raiders, climbing cliffs and whitewater rafting. Crossing hostile countries on the brink of war with their home lands. The story keeps you gripped to the end.
Then the books takes a jump in time and you have a more emotional story of Dion and Aranur when they are older. Won't say more than that, don't want to spoil their story.
The last two books in the series tell the tale of Dion's children.
and grandchild.
I recomend this series to those who are looking for some action and adventure and even a little romance. Not recommended for young readers, there are quite a few rather intense violent scenes. But very good story telling. I can read these books over and over again.
