Our second day in Washington, DC was spent mostly at the American History Museum and the Natural History Museum. And once again Mike found us some sweet parking, just a few blocks from the White House. The weather was starting to get a little rainy so we were glad to be spending the day indoors. We swung by the White House and the US Treasury buildings before heading for the Smithsonians.

We walked by the US Treasury Building without realizing what it was...we were too excited to see the White House.

And then behind double fences and patrolling guards we found the White House...it was early so there wasn't many protesters out.
Doug and I then ran around to the back of the White House and caught another shot of it. Passing a cool statue on the way.

Then we headed over to the American History Museum. Mike, Nicole and Josh were waiting there for us.

The museum was three stories packed full of history. We started up on the third floor in the Presidential History room. They had things like George Washington's chair and Abraham Lincoln's top hat. Here are some pictures:

Across the hall was a room displaying the dresses and gowns that the First Ladies wore. Along with some of their dinner china. It was kind of cool. The guys found it boring so Nicole and I were the two that actually walked through it.
The we found this cool old Revolutionary War boat. It was found at the bottom of a river and brought to the Smithsonian...they had to remove a wall to get it up onto the third floor. It even had the cannon that sunk it.

Then we headed over to the Military History section...I love military history, it was one of my focuses when I studied History in collage. So this part of the museum was really interesting. I took a bunch of pictures.
Revolutionary War stuff. It was fun seeing exhibits about Boston and other places we had just been.

The section on Military History ended with a room dedicated to the Medal of Honor recipients.
We traveled down to the second floor and saw a statue of George Washington:
There was an exhibit that didn't allow photos but they had the original Star Spangled Banner...it was huge. There were large pieces cut out of it. After it became famous people had taken pieces of it for keepsakes. But what remained was really cool.
We found the ruby slippers from OZ and Kermit the frog....and they even had a piece of the first Nauvoo Temple.
We walked pass this amazing doll house...it was huge.
The next exhibit was all about trains, boats and automobiles....lots and lots of them:

Then we ended our tour with blingy bikes and money...also gangsters and a women walking the museum in period cloths:
The American History Museum was awesome. Doug and I went to the basement and got some lunch at the cafeteria...while Mike, Nicole and Josh headed on over to the Natural History Museum. I think the burgers we got were the most expensive food we bought on the entire trip....the museums are free but they sure get ya with the food and gift shops....After eating we headed over to join the others.
